the Company
CODAR Ocean Sensors, Ltd., is the global leader in oceanographic high frequency (HF) radar systems. Company headquarters are located in Mountain View, California, where personnel conduct research, design, manufacture and support its products. Staff at CODAR Ocean Sensors are the world’s experts in HF radar theory and system design, including all hardware and software.
The company has produced approximately 80% of all oceanographic HF radars ever built worldwide and maintains a network of global partnerships for system sales and service to enhance the customer experience in whatever country or region they reside. CODAR staff are dedicated to ensuring that company-built technology and services continue to improve based on real-world experiences and feedback to best meet our customers’ evolving needs.
Company Origins
In 1971, Dr. Donald Barrick joined the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) with the mission of realizing oceanographic HF radar systems capable of providing wave and current data along the U.S. nation’s coasts. By applying the rough surface scattering theory he developed in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s at Ohio State University and the Battelle Memorial Institute, Barrick and others demonstrated the utility and accuracy of such measurements through designing, building and utilizing large phased array HF systems and, ultimately, the smaller, more transportable, compact cross loop CODAR design.
CODAR Today
In 1984, the core team that invented these systems left the government to eventually form what became CODAR Ocean Sensors Ltd., developing the robust and extremely compact commercial HF radar version known today as the SeaSonde®. Since that time, CODAR’s customers have demonstrated the power and utility of coastal current mapping and wave monitoring for society and the blue economy, growing ocean observatories with HF radar as a backbone technology. CODAR’s products have evolved and proliferated to become the top choice for coastal oceanographic radar among scientists and metocean agencies for coastal ocean observatories worldwide. The company has also grown into a diverse collection of ocean scientists, mathematicians, computer and electrical engineers and ocean technology business leaders whose passion and dedication was recognized with the 2020 Marine Technology Society (MTS) Compass Industrial Award.
